Weight Management ProtocolHormones and the Overweight Body
Many factors contribute to unwanted weight and obesity. These include diet, lifestyle, exposure to environmental toxins (xenoestrogens), and stress. In addition, hormonal changes push the body towards the development of metabolic dysfunction which can lead to a number of obesity-related conditions, including what is commonly known as Insulin Resistance (IR). Although insulin is the primary hormone disrupted in IR, a sluggish metabolism may be due to insufficiency or inefficiency of several contributing hormones within the neuroendocrine system – the principle regulator of energy metabolism. This imbalance can lead to an increase in fat tissue as well as an accumulation of by-products and a delayed evacuation of hormones (insulin, leptin and estrogen, which contribute to fat storage) and toxic metabolites, further contributing to the underlying causes of this epidemic condition.
Simple dietary and lifestyle changes are often not enough to alter the internal biochemical environment of the overweight body. In order to effectively support healthy body composition, we need to illicit a change at the level of the body’s hormonal cell signaling system, including those hormones released from adipocytes (fat cells), in order to sway the system away from storing more energy as fat.
Successful weight management involves increasing the rate at which the body turns energy into heat, raising the body temperature and encouraging the body to burn energy rather than store it. This process is known as thermogenesis. People who have trouble losing weight, despite a reasonable effort, often do not respond to food consumption with adequate thermogenesis, and therefore suffer from consequences of poor metabolic response in the form of excess weight. Healthy thermogenic activity is also essential to proper digestion, absorption, and metabolism of nutrients.
Natura’s Weight Management Protocol is designed to support a healthy endocrine response, improve hormone efficiency, and encourage thermogenesis. In addition, the protocol addresses the underlying complex web of hormonal and enzymatic relationships which guide and direct the body’s metabolic processes. The recommendations herein are beneficial for overweight people who are looking to lose weight, as well as for those who are trying to maintain optimal body composition for the promotion of longevity and greater quality of life.
